'When you see Mr de Winter, Madam, will you tell him it will be quite all right if he wants to bring the men back from the ship?	- Когда вы увидите мистера де Уинтера, мадам, передайте ему, пожалуйста, что, если он хочет привести сюда людей с корабля, все будет готово.
There will be a hot meal ready for them any time.'	Они получат горячую еду, когда бы ни пришли.
'Yes,' I said. 'Yes, Mrs Danvers.'	- Хорошо, миссис Дэнверс, - сказала я. - Хорошо.
She turned her back on me and went along the corridor to the service staircase, a weird gaunt figure in her black dress, the skirt just sweeping the ground like the full, wide skirts of thirty years ago.	Она повернулась ко мне спиной и пошла к задней лестнице - причудливая костлявая фигура в черном платье, которое мело подолом пол, как пышные широкие юбки начала века.
Then she turned the corner of the corridor and disappeared.	Вот она завернула за угол и скрылась.
I walked slowly along the passage to the door by the archway, my mind still blunt and slow as though I had just woken from a long sleep.	Я медленно двинулась по коридору к двери у арки; я все еще была в каком-то отупении, словно только сейчас очнулась от долгого сна.
I pushed through the door and went down the stairs with no set purpose before me.	Вышла на площадку и стала спускаться по лестнице, не имея понятия, что делать дальше.
Frith was crossing the hall towards the dining-room.	Через холл по направлению к столовой шел Фрис.
When he saw me he stopped, and waited until I came down into the hall.	Увидев меня, он остановился и подождал, пока я спущусь.
'Mr de Winter was in a few moments ago, Madam,' he said.	- Мистер де Уинтер приходил несколько минут назад, мадам, - сказал он.
'He took some cigarettes, and then went back again to the beach.	- Взял несколько пачек сигарет и пошел обратно на берег.
It appears there is a ship gone ashore.'	Там, оказывается, сел на мель пароход.
' Yes,' I said.	- Да, - сказала я.
'Did you hear the rockets, Madam?' said Frith.	- Вы слышали ракеты, мадам? - сказал Фрис.
' Yes, I heard the rockets,' I said.	- Да, слышала, - сказала я.
'I was in the pantry with Robert, and we both thought at first that one of the gardeners had let off a firework left over from last night,' said Frith, 'and I said to Robert,	- Я был в буфетной с Робертом, и мы сперва подумали, что кто-то из садовников запустил шутиху, оставшуюся с вечера, - продолжал Фрис.- И я сказал Роберту:
"What do they want to do that for in this weather?	"Зачем они это делают в такой туман?
Why don't they keep them for the kiddies on Saturday night?"	Оставили бы на субботу для ребятишек".
And then the next one came, and then the third.	А тут вторая разорвалась, а потом и третья.
"That's not fireworks," says Robert, "that's a ship in distress."	"Нет, это не фейерверк, - сказал Роберт. - Это сигнал бедствия. Где-то тонет корабль".
"I believe you're right," I said, and I went out to the hall and there was Mr de Winter calling me from the terrace.'	"Да, ты, верно, прав", - сказал я и вышел в холл. Тут я и услышал, как мистер де Уинтер зовет меня с террасы.
' Yes,' I said.	- Да, - сказала я.
'Well, it's hardly to be wondered at in this fog, Madam.	- И нечему удивляться, мадам, в такую-то погоду.
